Jeju is set to raise its social distancing restrictions to the toughest Level 4 this week as it battles a spike in new coronavirus cases.

The provincial government announced the popular resort island will move from Level 3 to Level 4 rules starting Wednesday until August 29.

With the move, all 12 public beaches and 498 elderly welfare facilities on the island will be closed.

Private gatherings will be capped at four people before 6 p.m. and restricted to a maximum of two people after 6 p.m.

Restaurants, cafes and other multiuse facilities will only be allowed to operate until 10 p.m., while bars, clubs and singing rooms are forced to close temporarily.

Jeju has recorded 290 new coronavirus cases for the past week.
