Former Prime Minister Chung Won-shik, known for his role in crafting a pact for inter-Korean reconciliation, has died at the age of 91.

His family said he passed away Sunday morning after months of battling a kidney ailment.

A memorial altar has been set up for him at Asan Medical Center in southern Seoul and he will be laid to rest Tuesday at a state cemetary in Daejeon.

Chung served as premier from 1991-1992 and is best remembered for his efforts to reach a historic agreement with North Korea over cross-border reconciliation, which was signed in December 1991.

He also served under the Roh Tae-woo administration as education minister from 1988-1990.

Chung is survived by his wife and four daughters.■
