A ceremony to mark the 33rd anniversary of the June Democracy Movement will be held in Seoul Wednesday, paying tribute to those who took part in mass demonstrations for democratic rights and the student activists who helped fight for free elections in South Korea.

Some 70 activists and government officials including President Moon Jae-in will take part in the ceremony at the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall in the Yongsan District at 10 a.m.

The mother of Lee Han-yeol, a student activist who died after being hit by a tear gas canister hurled by riot police during a protest at Yonsei University in 1987, will also deliver a message.

Lee's death triggered a series of demonstrations across the country that forced the government to introduce a direct presidential election system.

Due to current health and safety concerns amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the interior ministry said quarantine measures will be in place during the ceremony with a minimum number of participants.
