Health authorities have attributed the downward trend in daily new coronavirus cases during the past few days to decreased testing over the weekend.

Second Vice Health Minister Kang Do-tae said Tuesday that even though the number of cases has been under 100 for the past five days, it is too early for the country to let its guard down.

The official expressed concern over the upcoming Chuseok holiday, noting that a significant number of people plan to travel, increasing the risk of virus transmission.

He reiterated warnings that the holidays could become a catalyst for another wave of COVID-19, and asked people to stay alert and follow quarantine guidelines.

Kang also called on civic groups to withdraw their plans to hold rallies on Saturday, National Foundation Day, stressing they will be dealt with sternly if they push ahead with the gatherings.
