Wonju, the most populous city in Gangwon Province, has decided to take proactive measures amid the coronavirus crisis in the country, and will upgrade to Level 2 social distancing from Tuesday for about one week.
The city, southeast of Seoul, confirmed seven new infections over the weekend, raising its total caseload to 234.
Wonju Mayor Won Chang-mook announced the move on Monday, warning local residents that the virus could spread more quickly in the winter as people spend more time indoors.
Under the toughened measures, restaurants must suspend dine-in services at 9 p.m. and only allow takeout and delivery afterwards.
Clubs and four other types of nightlife establishments will be forced to close while schools limit in-person classes to one third of their total student body.
Wonju also announced it will provide free COVID-19 testing until June 2021.
