All international students bound for South Korea will be required to undergo additional coronavirus testing within a day of arrival.
The education ministry announced toughened measures on Wednesday, in the latest effort to protect students and curb community spread of the highly contagious virus.
Effective for the first half of the year, all international students will continue to submit negative COVID-19 test results conducted within 72 hours before boarding their flights.
They are also subject to a test upon arrival and another just before the end of the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine period.
The ministry said it is advising international students to refrain from coming to Korea and instead take online classes in their respective countries.
Government data shows from March to December, a total of 165 coronavirus infections were detected among 56,000 international students in the country.
Of the total, 41 students were confirmed to have the virus during the screening process at the airport and the rest tested positive during quarantine.
