The wife of Belgian Ambassador to South Korea Peter Lescouhier has avoided assault charges due to diplomatic immunity.
The ambassador's wife faced police questioning on May 6 over allegations that she slapped a clothing store employee in the face and another employee on the back of the head in the Itaewon area last month.
The incident was captured on the shop's surveillance camera and quickly spread online, drawing public backlash.
After the incident, which drew controversy, the ambassador's wife was hospitalized with a stroke.
She was discharged on April 23.
On Sunday, the Yongsan Police Station in central Seoul, which has been investigating the case, announced the ambassador's wife said she would exercise her diplomatic immunity.
This comes despite Ambassador Lescouhier earlier saying she would cooperate with the local investigation.
