Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin and Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop announced on Wednesday a plan to make a joint bid to host the 2038 Summer Asian Games.
The two cities said they will form a working-level committee to discuss the matter based on past experiences of hosting international competitions.
The 2003 Summer Universiade and 2011 World Athletics Championships were held in Daegu, while Gwangju put on the Summer Universiade in 2015 and the World Aquatics Championships two years ago.
If their bid is successful, it will be the fourth Summer Asian Games in South Korea.
Seoul hosted the regional event in 1986, followed by Busan in 2002 and Incheon in 2014.
