Chanthu, the 14th typhoon of the season, is steadily approaching the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, Chantu will get close to the southern resort island of Jeju on Friday morning.
The storm was located in waters some 360 kilometers south of Jeju early Wednesday morning, traveling at a speed of 8 kilometers per second.
The weather agency said the typhoon may get stronger as it gets closer.
Chanthu will bring rain to most regions starting from Thursday until Saturday.
Southern coastal areas will likely be hit the hardest with downpours and strong winds.
Minister Jeon Hae-cheol stressed the importance of disaster preparedness to keep people safe ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
The safety ministry has called on local governments to come up with measures in the case of landslides and flooding from the heavy rain that is expected.
