Owners of dogs deemed dangerous in South Korea will soon be required to have liability insurance that covers injuries or accidents that may be caused by their pets.

A revision to the Animal Protection Act that mandates dangerous dog insurance is expected to be deliberated upon and approved at a National Assembly plenary session this afternoon.

Under the change, those without an insurance plan can be fined up to 3 million won.

This will apply to dog owners of potentially dangerous breeds designated by the government, including the American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Rottweiler.

The punishment for animal cruelty and abandonment will also be strengthened.

Those who abuse animals resulting in death will face a fine of up to 30 million won or up to three years in prison.■
