2016년 프로야구 최고의 선수로 등극한 두산베어스의 선발투수인 더스틴 니퍼트(Dustin Nippert)는 KBO리그에서 뛴 지 6년 만에 받은 MVP 수상이 팀 동료들 덕분이라고 했다. 특히 위력적인 투구로 두산의 한국시리즈 2연패를 이끌 수 있었던 이유도 좋은 팀에 속해 있었고 즐기는 마음으로 경기에 임했기에 가능했다고 했다.

특히 양의지 선수는 KBO에서 가장 훌륭한 포수 중 한 명이라며 치켜세웠다. 처음에 한국에 왔을 때 언어장벽을 포함한 많은 어려움이 있을 거라는 우려와 달리 양의지 선수와 신속하게 환상적인 조합을 이룰 수 있었기에 두산에서 한국시리즈 우승을 2년 연속 이끄는 데 기여할 수 있었다고 했다. 이번 시즌의 좋은 성적 또한 양의지 선수가 있었기에 거둘 수 있었다고 강조다. 지난해 당한 여러 차례의 부상은 오히려 자신을 되돌아보는데 도움이 되었다고 했다.

두산과 계약하기 전에 일본 프로야구 요미우리와의 계약이 성사되지 못했을 때 두산과 계약을 할 수 있었던 점을 축복이라고 말한 니퍼트 선수는 두산베어스가 외국선수들을 대하는 자세에 대해 끊임없이 칭찬했고 KBO에 빠르게 잘 적응할 수 있었던 것도 두산베어스의 배려가 있었기 때문이라고 감사를 전했다.

메이저리그에서 활약하기 원하는지에 대한 질문에는 잘 모르겠다면서 다음 스프링 캠프 때 두산에 잔류할지에 대해서는 두산은 항상 자신의 첫 번째 선택이라고 말했다.
선수들이 얘기하기 꺼려하는 연봉에 관해서는 자신은 자신이 받을 수 잇는 타당한 금액만 생각할 뿐 두산에 단 한 번도 높은 금액을 요구한 적이 없고 기준치를 벗어난 무리한 금전적 보상은 바라지 않는다고 설명했다.
두산 쪽에 오프시즌에는 연락하지 말라고 말한 부분과 미국에 돌아가면 연락이 끊긴다고 언급한 인터뷰에 대해서는 사실무근이라고 반박했다.

아내에 대한 악성댓글에 대해서는 마음이 아프다며 최근 경찰 수사를 의뢰했다고 말했다.

두산베어스의 선발투수인 두산 니퍼트와의 라디오 인터뷰는 tbs eFM (101.3 MHz) Primetime에서 11월 21일 저녁에 방송됐다. 이번시즌 MVP를 수상하게 된 소감, KBO에서의 적응, 두산과의 계약을 하게 된 계기 등 니퍼트 선수와의 솔직한 인터뷰가 진행됐다.

얼마 전에 한국시리즈가 마치면서 야구시즌이 마감됐는데요, 팬들로서는 아쉬움도 크고 벌써부터 야구를 그리워하시는 분들도 있으실거라 생각됩니다. 지난주 월요일에 거행된 2016년 KBO 시상식에서 두산 베어스의 선발투수 더스틴 니퍼트가 시즌 MVP로 선정됐습니다. 작년에 이어 올해도 뛰어난 활약을 펼친 니퍼트는 한국시리즈에서도 선전하며 두산을 2년 연속 우승으로 이끌었습니다. 두산 베어스의 선발투수 더스틴 니퍼트 선수, 지금 전화연결 되어 있는데요. 안녕하세요.

니퍼트: 안녕하세요

헨리신:
안녕하십니까. 인터뷰를 진행하기 앞서 MVP 수상을 진심으로 축하드립니다. 외국인 선수가 MVP 선정되려면 한국인 선수보다 더 높은 기준을 뛰어 넘어야 하는 것이 사실인데요. 외국인 선수가 MVP를 수상 한 경우는 상당히 드물죠. 전 두산 출신이었던 타이론 우즈, 다니엘 리오스 그리고 작년에 수상한 에릭 테임즈, 이 선수들이 전부인데, 먼저 MVP를 수상한 소감 한 말씀 부탁드립니다.

니퍼트:
덕분에 저와 더불어서 제 팀 동료들에게까지 스포트라이트가 비춰지는 것 같습니다. 뛰어난 선수들로 구성된 좋은 팀에 속해있어서 얻은 결과라고 생각합니다. 비록 상은 제가 탔지만 다 우수한 성적을 거둔 제 팀 동료들 덕분에 가능했던 것이라고 생각해요.

헨리신:
니퍼트 선수도 전년도 우승팀에 있었고, 두산에서도 꽤 오래 뛰셨습니다. 현재 팀 로테이션에서 제일 오래 마운드를 지키고 있습니다. KBO에서 활동 중인 외국인 선수 가운데서도 한 팀에서 제일 오래 활동하고 계시고요. 비록 두산과 함께 많은 성공을 거뒀지만 팀이 고전할 시기에도 함께 하셨죠. 올 시즌이 시작하기 전 선수 영입도 많았었는데, 작년우승에 이어 타이틀을 성공적으로 방어할 자신감을 가지고 있었나요?

니퍼트:
저는 너무 멀리 앞을 내다보지 않으려 해요. 물론 이번 시즌에 우리 팀이 강하다는 것을 알고 있었지만, 너무 자만하지 않고 열심히 뛰면 좋은 결과가 나올 것이라고 믿었습니다. 물론 다른 팀들도 저희와 마찬가지로 전력 보강을 많이 했죠. NC다이노스도 여러 가지도 보강을 했죠. 하지만 저희가 할 수 있는 선에서, 능력밖에 일들을 시도하지 않고, 야구를 즐기면서 게임에 임하면 너무 걱정할일은 없을 거라고 생각했습니다.

헨리신:
올해 두산은 정규시즌에서 90승 고지를 넘고 코리안 시리즈에서도 NC 다이노스를 완파하면서 강팀의 면모를 시작부터 끝까지 보여줬습니다. 시상식에서 MVP 수상 소감을 전달하시면서 선발 포수 양의지 선수를 지목하셨는데요. 야구에서는 국적을 불문하고 포수와의 배터리 호흡은 투수의 성공과 실패를 좌우하는 아주 중요한 요소 중 하나죠. 언뜻 보기에는 한국인 포수와 미국인 투수가 호흡을 맞춘다는 게 문화, 언어적 장벽 때문에 상당히 어려울 것 같은데요. 그동안 양의지 선수와 어떻게 소통하고 교감했는지, 니퍼트 선수의 성공에 양의지 선수와의 케미스트리가 얼마만큼 기여했는지 궁금합니다.

니퍼트:
경기 때만이 아니라 경기장 밖에서도 저는 양의지 선수와 좋은 친구로 지내고 있습니다. 말씀하신대로 저도 처음 한국에 왔을 때에는 많은 의구심을 품고 있었습니다. 양의지 선수는 영어가 서툴고, 저는 한국어가 서툰데 어떻게 의사소통을 해야 할지 참 난감했었어요. 그럼에도 불구하고 서로 통하는데 오래 걸리지 않았어요. 양의지 선수는 제 첫 불펜투구와 첫 선발 때 공을 잡아줬는데 금세 제 강점과 약점을 파악했고, 통역사의 도움으로 이를 저에게 알려줬죠. 예를 들어 저는 유독 스텝이 느려서 도루에 유독 약한 모습을 보여 왔었고 포수기 도루를 저지하는데도 어려움을 줬어요. 서로의 손발이 완벽하게 맞추는데 까지 불과 두 달밖에 걸리지 않았어요. 양의지 선수는 홈 플레이트 뒤에서 엄청난 활약을 펼치고 잘 보이지 않는 곳에서도 헌신하는 포수예요. 양의지 선수뿐만이 아니고 백업포수 박세혁, 최재훈 선수도 평소에 엄청난 연습량을 소화합니다. 비디오 분석도 열심히 하고 경기 전 사이드 세션도 가지곤 하죠. 대체적으로 저희 투수들은 팀의 포수들과 배터리 코치진의 도움을 정말 많이 받고 있기 때문에, 간혹 가다 양의지 선수가 휴식이 필요한 날에는 든든한 백업선수들의 매끄럽고 원활한 이행이 가능하게 됩니다. 그럼에도 양의지 선수가 리더 역할을 맡고 있는 건 의심의 여지가 없으며, 적어도 한국에선 현존 최고의 포수라고 생각합니다. 여태껏 제가 같이 일해 본 포수 중에서 가장 우수한 선수중 하나이며, 이 기회에 존경을 표하고 싶습니다. 양의지 선수와의 호흡 없이는 제가 MVP를 수상하는 것은 불가능했을 거라고 생각해요.

헨리신:
물론 말씀하신 데로 포수와의 배터리 호흡은 상당히 중요한 요소지만, 니퍼트 선수의 올해 개인성적은 기록이 모든 것을 말해주죠. 지난 몇 년간 KBO 최고의 투수 중 하나로 군림해왔지만, 최근 들어 주위에서는, 니퍼트 선수의 기량이 얼마만큼이나 남았을까하는 의문이 돌고 있었습니다. 이런 우려가 잘못됐다는 것을 올 시즌, 특히 플레이오프에서의 활약으로 증명하셨죠. 어느 시점에서 반환점을 돌았다고 생각하시나요? 몸 관리에 신경 쓰고 부상을 피한 게 올해 MVP를 수상한 가장 중요한 비결이었나요?

니퍼트:
조금 이상하게 들릴 수도 있겠지만, 작년에 부상을 당한 것이 오히려 저한테 약이 되었고 큰 교훈을 남겨준 것 같아요. 제가 현재 어느 위치에 있고 어떤 목표를 가져야 되는지 깨닫게 되었죠. 부상을 당하기전에는 모든 것을 당연한 것처럼 받아들였어요. 5일마다 한 번씩 경기에 출전하는 게 일상이 돼버리면서 모든 것이 정체돼버린 상태였죠. 물론 열심히 뛰었습니다, 오해하지 마세요, 하지만 매너리즘에 빠져 있었던 것도 사실입니다. 하지만 부상을 당하는 순간 깨달았죠. "아, 내가 지금 누리고 있는 이 모든 것을 한순간에 빼앗길 수 도 있구나. 한 번의 큰 부상으로 내 야구인생이 끝날 수도 있구나." 부상에서 회복하고 재기하는데 상당히 많은 어려움을 겪었어요. 작년만 해도 다치고 재활하고, 또 다치고 하는 것을 반복했죠. 야구를 사랑했기에 선수생활을 계속 이어나가려면 몸 관리에 신경을 써야겠다고 다짐했습니다. 하지만 야구는 결국 게임이죠. 진지한 마음가짐과 동시에 팀 동료들과 함께 최대한 오랫동안 같이 즐기고 싶어요. 제가 야구를 직업으로 삼을 수 있다는 것은 정말 소중한 기회이자 축복이라고 생각합니다. 등판하지 않는 날은 일하는 날이고 등판하는 날은 즐기는 날이에요. 필드에 나서기 전에 마음을 비우고 팀 동료들과 함께 즐긴다는 목적으로 뛰죠. 그들이 호수비를 펼치고 멋지게 득점을 올리는 장면을 보면서 같이 흠뻑 빠져들어요.

헨리신:
어릴 때부터 웨스트 버지니아주의 작은 마을에서 자라며 오랫동안 야구의 열정을 키워오셨다고 생각됩니다. 메이저리그에서 뛴 경험도 있으신데, 애리조나 다이아몬드백스, 그리고 텍사스 레인저스 출신이었던 것으로 알고 있습니다. 후자의 경우, 2010년 텍사스가 월드시리즈에 진출했을 때 플레이오프 선수명단에도 이름을 올렸었죠. 하지만 그 이후로, 멀고 험난한 길을 걷다가 결국 한국에 들어오게 ㅤㄷㅚㅆ는데, 제가 듣기로는 일본의 요미우리 자이언츠가 해외구단으로서는 제일 먼저 니퍼트 선수와 접촉을 한 것으로 알고 있습니다. 요미우리는 흔희 일본의 뉴욕 양키스로 불릴 수 있을 만큼 명문구단으로 알려져 있는데, 만약 두산 베어스가 아닌 요미우리로 이적했으면 니퍼트 선수의 인생이 어떻게 달려졌을까요?

니퍼트:
글쎄요, 저도 잘 모르겠네요. 오늘날 저의 모습과 비슷했을지, 더 큰 성공을 거뒀을지 아니면 더 험난한 고난의 길을 걸었을지는 미지수입니다. 그래도 제가 소속팀이 없었을 때 두산에 로스터 자리가 있었다는 게 큰 행운이었다고 생각합니다. 그 당시에 텍사스 구단에서 갑작스럽게 저를 로스터에서 제외시키면서 한순간에 낙동강 오리 알 신세가 되었어요. 메이저리그에서 계속 뛰고 싶었고 그러기에 실력이 충분하다고 믿었지만 아무도 저에게 관심을 보이지 않았던 시기에 두산에서 제 에이전트에게 연락을 했습니다. 처음에는 한국이 너무 낯선 나라라서 주저하며 계속 미국 내에서도 찾고 있었는데 때마침 요미우리에서도 연락이 와서 계약 단계까지 갔습니다. 일본리그의 계약절차는 어떻게 되는지 잘 모르겠지만, 제가 서명한 계약서와 다른 선발투수의 계약서가 요미우리 구단주에게 보고형식으로 올라갔고, 다른 선수의 계약이 승인되고 저는 거절당했어요. 이게 12월 말에서 1월 초에 벌어진 일이라서 발등에 불이 떨어진 상태였죠. 황급히 제 에이전트에게 전화해서 "한국에 있는 구단에 한번 연락해서 아직도 우리한테 관심 있는지 물어봐줄래?" 말했죠. 다행히도 로스터 자리가 남아있는 상태라서 두산과 계약을 마쳤습니다. 그때까지 두산 자리가 남아있어서 감사했고, 두산에 입단한 것 또한 큰 축복이라고 생각해요.

헨리신:
한국에서 뛰는 미국인 선수로서 그동안 이런 질문은 수없이 받아왔을 것이라고 생각됩니다만, 한국문화에 익숙해지는데 큰 어려움은 없었나요? 한국 야구의 훈련방식이나 워밍업도 미국이랑 상당히 다른데 그동안 적응기간이 필요했을 것 같아요. 지금은 많이 편안해졌나요? 다른 용병선수 같은 경우, 한국에서 뛰면서도 최종 목표는 메이저리그를 향해 있는데, 니퍼트 선수 같은 경우에도, 메이저리그에 다시 도전하고 싶은 욕심이 아직 남아있는지 궁금합니다.

니퍼트:
잘 모르겠네요. 상황에 따라 득실을 따져가면서 저울질을 해봐야 할 것 같아요. 처음 한국에 왔을 때는 모든 게 익숙하지 않아서 적응이 많이 필요했죠. 말씀하신 것처럼, 스트레칭부터 시작해서 체력훈련까지 미국이랑 다른 방식으로 이뤄졌어요. 하지만 운 좋게도 코칭 스태프가 열린 마음을 갖고 제 나름의 페이스대로 차근차근 적응해갈 수 있게 많이 도와줬습니다. 다른 팀에서 뛰고 있는 선수들 같은 경우 그런 대우를 못 받은 경우도 있고, 감독과 코치들이 시키면 무조건 복종해야 한다고 들었어요. 두산 같은 경우, 제가 다른 선수들처럼 똑같이 훈련방식을 따라가고 싶어도, 체력적으로 불가능한 부분이 있었어요. 특히나 한국은 스프링캠프가 일찍 시작해서 더더욱 어려웠고요. 첫 시즌을 성공적으로 마치고 코치들은 절 이해해줬죠. 제가 스스로 많은 노력을 기울이는 것을 높이 삼았는지 그저 "다음시즌 개막전까지 알아서 준비해요" 이렇게 말하곤 했어요. 저는 제 역할을 진지하게 받아들이기 때문에 따로 누가 돌봐줄 필요가 없어요. 훈련이 필요할 때에는 알아서 하죠. 이런 차원에서 두산은 외국인 선수를 정말 잘 다룬다고 생각합니다. 너무 지나치게 관여하지 않고 스스로 알아서 적응할 수 있는 환경을 조성함으로서, 시즌이 개막하면 피로감 없이 최고의 기량을 펼칠 수 있게 도와주죠.

헨리신:
한국무대에서 꽤 오래 활동하셨습니다. 특히나 삼성 라이온스가 리그를 평정했을 시기에도 활동하셨는데요. 하지만 이제는 "두산 왕조 시대“가 도래한 것 같네요. 뛰어난 기량을 가진 핵심선수들이 아직도 팀의 주축을 형성하고 있습니다. 하지만 외국인 선수의 계약기간은 보통 1년 단위로 진행되어 매년 시즌이 끝나면 재협상이 이루어지죠. 조심스러운 마음으로 니퍼트 선수의 향후거취를 여쭤보고자 합니다. 다음 스프링 캠프가 다가올 때 두산 유니폼을 계속 입고 있을 거라 생각하시는지요?

니퍼트:
좋은 질문이에요. 안 그래도 시상식이 끝나고 많은 사람들이 궁금해 하더라고요. 최근 두산 베어스 관계자가 언론에 제가 돈에 눈이 멀었다는 둥, 저를 비방하는 발언을 했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그 관계자에 따르면, 두산이 저와 재계약하지 않으면 저와 계약할 다른 팀이 없다고 했고, 또 제가 오프시즌에 미국 집으로 돌아가면 두산에서 오는 모든 연락을 다 안받는다는 내용으로 기사가 나왔더라고요. 이 기사내용은 사실무근입니다. 저는 한 번도 구단 측에게 저에게 직접적인 연락을 하지 말라고 했던 적이 없고, 거액의 계약금을 요구한 적이 없습니다. 누가, 어떤 이유로 이런 허위사실을 유포했는지는 모르지만, 정말 화가 나고 저는 이 내용과 완전 반대입니다. 저는 제 팀은 물론, 한국을 사랑합니다. 물론 두산과의 재계약이 저의 첫 번째 선택이지만, 다른 직업과 다를 바 없습니다. 어떠한 일을 잘하면 돈을 더 많이 받을 자격이 있는 것이 비즈니스입니다. 저는 제가 스스로 자격이 없다고 생각하면 그에 부합하지 않는 요구는 절대 하지 않습니다. 저는 기대가 그리 높지 않고, 기준치를 벗어나 무리한 금전적 보상을 바라지 않아요. 다만 다른 선수들의 연봉을 알고 있고, 제가 받을 수 있는 타당한 금액을 생각하는 것뿐입니다. 기사를 읽고 실망하신 팬들이 많은 것 같은데 그 내용은 사실과 전혀 무관하다는 것을 재차 강조하고 싶습니다.

헨리:

헨리신: 물론이죠.

니퍼트: 팬들 여러분께는 정말 감사하지만, 최근 제 아내를 향한 인터넷 악성댓글들을 보게 됩니다. 정말 이해할 수 없는 일이고 화가 납니다. 저희 부부는 이런 댓글을 읽었고 또 상처도 많이 받았습니다. 제가 사랑하는 사람에 대해 악플이 달리는 것을 보면 가슴이 아파요. 아내가 아무 이유 없이 괴롭힘 당하는 것을 지켜보다가 최근 경찰에 신고를 했습니다. 그동안 계속 참아왔지만 인내심의 한계에 다다른 것 같네요. 아름다운 일에 대해 부정적으로 말하는 사람들에게는 한국법이 다르다는 부분을 강조하고 싶습니다. 인터넷상에 글을 올리고서도 처벌을 피할 수 있을 것 같으면 오산입니다. 경찰은 물론, 변호사에게도 대응방안을 의뢰해 놓은 상태이며, SNS 등에 올라온 글에 대해서도 조사를 진행하고 있습니다. 저희 부부가 일상으로 돌아갈 수 있게 많은 도움 주신 수사 관계자는 물론 변호사들에게 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전하고 싶습니다.

Henry: Well, baseball season is over and for a lot of Korean fans, a lot of you probably miss it, very badly. Well, last Monday, there was a bit of a treat for the fan as well as the players. The KBO awards ceremony took place in Seoul, and the starting pitcher for the Doosan Bears, Dustin Nippert, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 KBO season. He had another brilliant year, and of course carried his team to victory in the Korean Series, the second straight year that Doosan has won the championship. We’re very pleased to have joining us a very special guest tonight on the line, Dustin Nippert of the Doosan Bears. Hello.

Dustin: How are you doing?

Henry: I’m doing great, thank you so much for joining us. Obviously first of all, congratulations on winning the MVP award, and we know here in Korea there is, you could say unofficially, a little bit of a higher bar that the foreign players have to cross to named an MVP. We’ve only had a few in history, Tyrone Woods, Daniel Rios, both of the Doosan Bears and of course more recently, Eric Thames. So just winning this award, your basic thoughts on that honor?

Dustin: Honestly I feel like it’s kind of putting me on a spotlight over myself and over my teammates and such but I feel like I’ve accomplished this award by being on such a great team and such a great group of guys. I feel like, yeah I get the award, but I feel at the same time that it’s a testament to my teammates and how well we did this season.

Henry: Well speaking of that, you were the defending champions and you’ve been a part of the team for quite a while. You’re the longest tenured pitcher currently standing and I think you’re tied for the longest tenured foreign player on one team in the KBO. You’ve been through some of the lean years right? You’ve had playoff success but you’ve also had teams that maybe weren’t quite as good. What do you think, coming into this season, being the defending champs and the influx of talent, did you feel confident that you guys had a pretty good shot to win the title this year?

Dustin: I never look too far ahead into the future, but I definitely knew, coming into this season, that we had a really good team and my whole thoughts were, as long as we didn’t get too overly-confident, and just went out there and played every day, I knew we’d be okay. But other teams also made a lot of moves last season to make themselves better, I mean NC (Dinos) made a lot of moves and stacked up their roster. I knew as long as we stayed within ourselves and didn’t try to do too much, and just went out there to have fun and competed, we would be fine. I think we did just that.

Henry: The 90 plus wins. A surprisingly easy time in the Korea Series where you basically dominated the NC Dinos and a lot of people were saying, well I guess it was a pretty much destined to be this way as far as the dominance. At the awards ceremony, when you did receive the MVP, you did mention one guy, Yang Eui-ji(양의지), the starting catcher of the Doosan Bears and I know that for baseball players all over the world, that battery connection, how you connect with a catcher is pretty important to your success. You often think that cultural differences and language differences might make it difficult for a Korean catcher and an American pitcher. How deep is that connection and how much do you think that did contribute to your success, your friendship and your chemistry with Yang?

Dustin: I think on and off the field, me and Yang get along very well. Coming over here, like you said, I had my reservations. What was I going to be speaking with my catcher, like I do in the States? I’m not fluent in Korean and he’s not fluent in English. But I honestly felt that we just kind of clicked. He caught my first bullpen when I first came here and then he caught me in my first couple of games, and he saw my strengths but then he also saw my weaknesses, which I thought was good. That kind of helped me and we would talk though a translator, how my strengths would help me here but also stuff that I needed to work on. Because when I came here, I was real slow to the plate and if that was going to the case then guys would be stealing bases all day and not give him a chance to throw guys out. Honestly, I felt like the first couple of months of the season in my first year, we just clicked and we just hit it off. He does a tremendous job behind the plate and he does a tremendous job also that people don’t see. They see the games, but him and the other catchers, Se-hyeok(박세혁) and Jae-hun(최재훈), they also put in a tremendous amount of work away from the field. They’re in there watching videos. They’re doing their work on the side before the game. I feel like our catching coach and our catchers do a tremendous job of handling the pitchers in general, so when Eui-ji(양의지) needs a day off, the other guys can step in through a seamless transition. But Eui-ji(양의지) is definitely the captain of the catchers and I feel he’s best catcher in Korea and he’s probably one of the best catchers that I’ve ever pitched to in my career, so my hats off to him. Honesty, there’s no way I would have gotten this award if he wasn’t my catcher and if we didn’t have the bond like we do.

Henry: Obviously, it’s important to have that connection and you attribute a lot of your success to that, but the stats speak for themselves, with the season you’ve had this year. You’ve been one of the top pitchers in the KBO for a number of years, but there were sometimes... a couple of years ago, people were wondering, well how much does he have left in the tank. Where do you think you turned the corner? Last year’s playoff performance was obviously brilliant and it led up through this dominating 2016 season. Do you think it was just a matter of health to get to where you are right now as the MVP of the KBO?

Dustin: Honestly I felt like... this is going to sound weird, but I honestly felt like being hurt last year helped me a lot and realize the player who I was and what I wanted to be. I felt like, before I got hurt, I took it for granted a little bit. I was out there every fifth day. I was pitching. I was stagnant. I was working hard and know my stuff, don’t get me wrong, but I was complacent I guess. Then when I got hurt, I realized, oh this could be taken away from me at any time. I could be one injury away from being out of baseball. Just coming back from being hurt and the work I had to put in. I’d get healthy, then I’d get hurt again. I’d get healthy, then I’d get hurt again. It happened a couple of times last year, so it really made me realize that, wow this is something that I really want to do, so I need to take care of myself. But also at the same time, I want to have fun with my teammates and I feel like I say that a lot. Baseball is a game and I love baseball and I love that I get to do this and I’m very blessed to be able to play this game. I don't know when it’s going to end, so I definitely just go out there now and just have fun. I would do my work in between starts, and I feel like those are my work days. And when I take to the field to pitch, those are my fun days. I get to go out there and enjoy with teammates and just have fun. I look around and those guys are playing great defense behind me and they’re scoring great runs. It’s just a good time and I just try to soak in all in.

Henry: That love of baseball and I know it’s been, I suppose, a part of your life since you were a little kid coming from a small town in West Virginia. I know you had some stints with the Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers, even on the Rangers’ playoff roster that year they made it to the World Series in 2010 I think. But you took a winding path and you landed in Korea. I heard that initially when you were thinking of going overseas, you were also in talks with the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Professional Baseball league, going to Japan. They’re like the New York Yankees of that country. Do you think you’re life would have been a lot different if you ended up going to Yomiuri and playing in Tokyo instead of Seoul?

Dustin: Honestly, I don’t know. I don’t know if I would have turned out the same. If it would have been more uphill or more downhill. But I’m just very lucky and very happy that Doosan still had a roster spot open when I was still looking for a job, because that offseason I got taken off the roster unexpectedly by Texas and I was out of a job. Honestly, I wanted to play in the major leagues and I felt like I could do that still. But no team would give me a major league offer and then Doosan contacted my agent, but I didn’t know anything about Korea and he didn’t know anything about Korea. We were hesitant at first, so we talked to them a little bit and we were still looking in the States and also Yomiuri contacted us. I actually signed a contract with Yomiuri and I don’t know how it works there, but they took my contract and another starting pitcher’s contract to the owner, and he chose the other starting pitcher over me. That’s how I ended up not going to Yomiuri. That was in late December/ early January so I called my agent in a panic. "Hey, call the team in Korea to see if they still need a pitcher!” Luckily they did and they had a roster spot open. Signing that contract, I feel like it was a blessing and I was glad that they still needed me. Ever since I’ve been here I feel like it’s just been great.

Henry: I know these are questions that, when you have an American player playing in Korea, you are asked a billion times, but the adjustment to Korean culture, to the Korean way of playing baseball, from how they do practices to how they do warm-ups. I know that was an adjustment period, but you seemed to have pretty much acclimated to everything now. Would you say that being in Korea is a pretty comfortable situation? Because I know a lot pitchers, and a lot of players who have stints in Korea, but their eyes are still on the major leagues. You’ve played major league baseball. Is that still something that, as a player wanting to play on the biggest stage, is among your ambitions?

Dustin: I don’t know honestly. That’s just something where I would have to see the contract and weigh the pros and cons. When I came to Korea in my first year, everything I was trying to get acclimated to was different. Like you said, the stretching, the running, the workout. Everything was different than in the States. So that was a bit of an adjustment. But I feel like I’m very lucky because the coaches, the training staff, they were really open to me coming here and letting me adjust at my own pace. I know there are other teams with foreign players, I’ve had friends play on other foreign teams and they said it wasn’t like that. They had to do everything the coaches said. They had to do what the manager said. They had to all the practices. With Doosan, I wanted to do that with them but there were some things that I wasn’t physically able to do because of how early spring training is. After my success in the first year, my coaches were really good about it. They were like “Hey, just be ready for opening day next season”. They saw that I did the work and that I wasn’t going to slack. I didn’t need a babysitter because this is my job and I take it seriously. When it’s time to work out, it’s time to work out. When it’s time to run, it’s time to run. I think that Doosan does a great job with their foreign players, letting us come here to acclimate ourselves and get ready at our own pace. It doesn’t burn us out and when it’s time to perform, we’re ready to go.

Henry: You’ve played through quite a number of years in Korea. Probably through the era of the Samsung Lions’ dominance when they were winning the Korea Series seemingly every single year. It does seem like we’re on the cusp of this Doosan Bears dynasty. The talent level is still there and you have a lot key players. And I know officially, foreign players are signed to 1-year contracts and it’s negotiation process every off-season. I know this is probably something that you want to keep close your vest, but do you foresee yourself in a Doosan Bears uniform for spring training next season?

Dustin: I’m glad you asked that because after the awards banquet, people were asking me the same thing. Today, I woke up and I was taken back a little bit because somebody in the Doosan front office was talking to the media and saying how I was money hungry and kind of making me look bad in front of the media. They were saying that if Doosan didn’t sign me back, no other team would and when I go home in the off-season I just ignore all Doosan calls and tell them to deal with my agent. This article is completely false and I never, one time, have told Doosan never to contact me. I never, one time, said you have to pay me a lot of money now. I never said that. I don’t know who would say that and who was trying to make me look bad and it upset me quite a bit because I’m the complete opposite of that. I love my teammates and I love it here. Obviously this is my first choice to come back here. I’d love to come back to Doosan, but it’s just like any other job. When you’re good at your job, you make more than other guys. That’s just how business works. When you’re good at your job, and you do well one year, you get a pay raise the next year. But I don’t want anything that I don’t deserve so I just want to throw that out there now. I don’t have any high expectations of, I’m gonna break the bank, or all this kind of stuff, I don’t. On the other hand, I know what the other players are making and I know what’s fair. I just want fans to know that and not look bad at me because of what this article said because it’s completely false. I completely disagree with all of it.

Henry: We definitely thank you for that. Oftentimes, you got sports writers and you don’t know where their sources are coming from. What the motivations are of the guys who are supposedly talking about this. It’s definitely great that you were able to correct the record there and hopefully the people listening, the baseball fans, the Doosan fans, know that’s where your true heart is at. No matter what, we do wish you the best of luck. I know you’re going to make the best decision for yourself as well as of course, hopefully for everyone else involved. We want to wish you the best of luck and hope to have you back again soon. Thanks a lot for joining us Dustin.

Dustin: I also would like to say that I really appreciate the fans, but there’s also a lot of negativity out there pointed towards my wife, and I really don’t understand that. It really upsets me. I just want people to know that, we do read these and it does hurt. When somebody talks like this about somebody that I really love, it hurts. So, we’re taking steps now to talk to the police because all the rules are different here in Korea. She’s being harassed for no reason. I kept putting it off but it needs to stop. She’s being harassed and it’s unnecessary. It’s just a bunch of people bringing negativity to something that’s so positive and I just want to say, the rules are different here in Korea, and if you think you’re going to get away with saying bad things on the internet, you’re not. We’ve talked to the police and we’ve talked to lawyers now. They’re on social media and they’re tracking these people down. I just want to say thank you to the police and thank you to the lawyers that we’ve talked to for helping to take care of this and helping to bring some positivity back to our life.
