Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main air hub, has gone into "emergency mode" as the number of users nosedived due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Incheon International Airport Corporation said it is currently handling around 10,000 passengers per day, down from 200,000 it normally processes.

According to the corporation, if the daily number of passengers drops to the 7,000-12,000 range for more than a week, the airport will likely have to reduce departure areas and scale back its shuttle train services.

In the event the figure drops below 7,000, the airport said it would shut down some of its terminals, and if it falls below the 3,000 mark, most commercial shops and facilities would have to be closed.

Senior managers of the corporation have agreed to accept a 20 to 30 percent wage cut for the time being, as part of efforts to help cope with the situation.■
