The Seoul Metropolitan Government says it will not allow civic roups to hold rallies in the capital on Saturday, Liberation Day, due to risks of coronavirus transmission.
Quarantine control officer Park Yoo-mi told reporters on Wednesday that the city formally requested several conservative and progressive groups to cancel their scheduled gatherings.
According to figures given by organizers, more than 42,000 people were expected to participate in seven separate demonstrations across the capital.
Police earlier voiced concerns that people were unlikely to adhere to COVID-19 preventative measures such as the wearing of masks and social distancing.
Park said if the rallies are not called off, the city will issue an administrative order banning all mass gatherings.
