Work to renovate Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul began Monday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said the northbound lanes of Sejongdae-ro, from the Sejongdae-ro intersection to the Gwanghwamun three-way intersection, will be expanded from the current five lanes to up to nine lanes.
This is expected to improve traffic flow in both directions.
A new park will also be constructed in front of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
The expansion work is scheduled to be completed by next February and only one lane will be blocked off at a time to minimize congestion in the area.
Park construction is planned from next May through October 2021 and will include the planting of more than 100 species of trees and flowers.
