The world's largest supplier of canned tuna has agreed to pay 6.3 million dollars in penalties for wastewater violations in American Samoa.
StarKist, based in Pittsburgh and owned by South Korea's Dongwon Industries, said it will also take steps to reduce environmental harm to the U.S. territory.
In 2014, a discharge pipeline break at its facility spilled wastewater into the inner Pago Pago Harbor.
The Environmental Protection Agency also found the company was improperly storing ammonia, butane and chlorine gas.■
