U.S. President Biden has lifted the cap on the number of refugees allowed into the United States this year to 62,500.

There was outcry last month from some Democrats and refugee aid groups when he reversed an election promise and said he would maintain the limit of 15,000 imposed by the Trump administration.

The BBC's Washington correspondent Tara McKelvey has more.

Biden's position had changed pretty dramatically after facing criticism from both the right and the left about his immigration policies.

There's been a surge of migrant children across the border.

And if you remember during the Trump White House, this is a core part of what Trump was trying to do while he was in office.

Stephen Miller, his immigration czar used to tell me about what they were trying to do along the border.

And this was popular among their conservative base.

These conservatives have attcked President Biden for his immigration policies and Democrats have also attacked President Biden.

So President Biden seems to, appeared to have said, 'I'm going to put a pause on this refugee program decision.'

That's why you have seen this sort of flip-flopping for a few weeks.
