The surge of the virus in recent weeks has overwhelmed India's health care system with hospital beds and oxygen in short supply in cities and towns.
Health workers warn that the virus is spreading fast in rural areas and states, having a devastating impact.
There is limited health care and a severe shortage of testing centers in villages and in nearby towns.
Medical experts say the actual figures in India could be five to 10 times higher than the official tally.
The government has been reluctant to impose a national lockdown for fear on the impact of economy.
