The White House's COVID-19 response team coordinator has indicated the U.S. will not be able to meet its goal of administering one or more doses of the coronavirus vaccine to 70 percent of adults by July 4.

But Jeffrey Zients said the Joe Biden administration had "succeeded beyond our highest expectations" in returning the nation to normality.

Zients on Tuesday told reporters they think it will take "a few extra weeks" to reach the herd immunity target.

Biden set the goal earlier this year, saying he hoped Americans would be able to gather with friends and family to celebrate the Independence Day holiday.

More than 65 percent of American adults have received one or more doses of vaccines developed by Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson, as of Tuesday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
