South Korea will begin administering AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine to senior citizens aged 65 to 74 from May 27.

Vaccination eligibility will be expanded to people over the age of 60 from June 7.

Announcing the plan Monday, the government said a total of 7.23 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive in the country between mid-May and the first week of June, while 5 million doses of Pfizer's jab will be also supplied by June.

President Moon Jae-in said earlier in the day that the vaccination campaign was going smoother than expected, addressing concerns over a looming vaccine shortage.

He expressed optimism that its goal of 12 million people getting the first shot in the first half of the year could be raised by one million if the country continues to maximize its vaccine rollout efficiency.
