South Korea could announce changes to social distancing levels later this week as there have been no significant signs of a slowdown in new coronavirus infections.

Currently, the capital region, Taebaek, Busan, Ulsan and parts of South Jeolla Province are under Level 2 distancing, while Level 1.5 measures are being enforced elsewhere.

A nationwide ban on private social gatherings of five or more people remains in place along with restrictions on operating hours at multiuse facilities such as restaurants and cafes in the greater Seoul area.

Health ministry spokesman Son Young-rae said Tuesday that an announcement could be made Friday.

Any changes to the distancing scheme would take effect Monday.

However, it's widely expected that current rules will be extended.
