Jeong Eun-kyeong, the commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, expressed optimism Thursday that daily coronavirus caseloads will significantly drop once more than 25 percent of the population has received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Jeong said South Korea will likely start to see a decrease in new infections in mid-July.

The government's goal is to have at least 14 million people, or a quarter of the country's 52 million population, get their first shot by the end of June.

The KDCA chief thanked the more than 10 million adults who have already received their dose and medical personnel on the frontlines of the pandemic for their efforts, courage and participation in the mass vaccination drive.
