Sports Minister Hwang Hee will be among the small group of invited officials to attend the opening of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
Hwang will depart Thursday afternoon for Japan to cheer on the South Korean athletes, according to the sports ministry.
He will represent the country in place of President Moon Jae-in, who decided earlier this week against traveling to Tokyo.
During his visit, Hwang will also take part in a meeting of sports ministers from around the world, where he will promote the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics to be held in Gangwon Province.
Hwang is also scheduled to meet with South Korean athletes and hand out box lunches to them on Saturday.
