People in South Korea who experience a severe reaction after getting a COVID-19 vaccine shot can receive compensation, regardless of whether or not there is proof it was caused by the vaccine.

The government, from Monday, will begin providing financial support of up to 10 million won to help cover treatment costs for vaccine recipients who experience severe, adverse effects.

Eligible individuals include those who develop illnesses and people who are admitted to intensive care units after getting inoculated.

Authorities said the move aims to boost government responsibility in protecting people from related injuries and build public trust in the national vaccination program.

Affected individuals or their guardians can apply for vaccine injury compensation at a community health care center.
