The southern city of Daejeon is set to strengthen its social distancing rules amid a recent surge in new coronavirus infections in the area.

Mayor Heo Tae-jeong announced in an emergency briefing Tuesday that Level 1.5 distancing rules will take effect from Thursday.

Restaurants, cafes, singing rooms, indoor gyms and private academies will be forced to close at 11 p.m. through June 30.

Currently, there are no restrictions on business hours.

Gatherings and events will also be limited to less than 100 people, while religious facilities will only be able to accommodate 20 percent capacity.

On Tuesday, Daejeon confirmed 58 new coronavirus cases, most of them linked to a church cluster.

Mayor Heo said there is a need to put a pause on life so that the disease doesn't spread further, and called on residents to stick to quarantine measures so the city can take advantage of the new national social distancing scheme that will begin next month.
